The Ruđer Bošković Institute is referred to as the leading institute of biomedical and natural sciences. It also deals with environmental and marine researches. It is considered as one of the leaders among the institutes in Croatia due to its international reputation, quality of personnel and faculty, size and scientific productivity. It is one of the most competitive institutes in Croatia based on the fact that it has active participation in international research campaigns.
Presently, Ruđer Bošković Institute is the possessor of more than 550 researchers and more than 80 laboratories. The scientists pursue research regularly in experimental and theoretical physics, material chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, laser development, nuclear development, computer sciences, etc.
The Ruđer Bošković Institute is progressing with its mission as to gain new knowledge leading to the development of their country and make it a knowledge based society. Fundamental scientific researches mean research derived from knowledge, and oriented research means research based on targets.
According to RBI its primary objective is to conduct basic research excellently and emphasizing particularly complicated interdisciplinary programs. Excellent work of research is the primary requirement from other projects that RBI has undertaken in the Republic of Croatia. Besides basic research it includes developing innovative research, producing high-tech products, making people aware about the importance of science and knowledge in the modern society, transfer of knowledge to the economy, etc. RBI is cooperated by other smaller scientific schools and institutions in Croatia.
RBI is expected to be the top institution for research work in the upcoming 5-10 years. It is expected to become a leader among the institutions both in regional and European level. RBI is expected to become a community of multidiscipline of scientific institutions and have their focus on internationally competitive projects. RBI will be having institutes which will be based on complex research projects, methodic international evaluation.
RBI will hold its position as the leader among scientific institutions at national level in cooperation with other smaller institutions. It is going to achieve this through quality scientific programs in related and natural sciences. RBI will be looking to improve its researchers particularly appointing new research personnel who will be recruited during implementing the Strategy. The flexibility of researchers and international experience, especially postdoctoral and doctoral personnel, establishing an efficient system for employment will be the key factor for the institute to emerge as the leader.
It will become an institution having nice administrative support and detailed and clean computerized procedures of administration. RBI is going to assume an essential role in popularizing science and increasing public awareness about the importance of science and knowledge. RBI is expected to become a institution with intensive cooperation with the business world. In the process RBI will promote transfer of knowledge, technology and innovation. This will also commercialize high quality research results.
RBI was established in 1951 with its name as Ruđer Bošković Institute after the name of the Croatian astronomer and physicist. In 1969 the Institute of Biology of the sea merged with RBI which led to the development of a new sector in the scientific institution, the research of marine environment.
